Justin Lapierre’s new choral work, Mass of Saint Anne, is a powerful statement of faith, acceptance, and connection across people groups. Saint Anne, the grandmother of Jesus, is revered in and around the town of Ste.-Anne-de-Beaupré, but nowhere is she mentioned in the Bible; one of the only texts we have about her is found in the Qur’an. This new work for choir and chamber orchestra is a dialogue across religious and cultural barriers, featuring a French translation of the mass text in a Quebecois dialect, traditional French Canadian fiddle reels, Taizé quotations, and the poetry of Rumi. The Mass is paired with Bach's Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich (BWV 150), a cantata that shares similar performing forces and explores a message of longing and hope for joy in the midst of trials.
